iSteamy: Items in Category Label

Friday, April 25th, 2008

I am working on iSteamy v2, and I have a question for all of you…

Do you like, use, hate, or not care about the number that says how many items are in an individual category?

(you know that number before the category name)

I am debating getting rid of it, but if people like it and use it, then I will keep it, but if you hate it or don’t care then I might get rid of it to better the design.

Please let me know

Mobile RSS v2.4.2

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

After installing the “Official SDK” my toolchain broke.

I have been trying to get it fixed and in the process even purchased a Mac Mini to work on non-official SDK apps. In the process of getting the toolchain working on the Leopard running Mac Mini, I was able to find a solution to get the toolchain working on the Mac Mini as well as on my main Mac.

Now with a working toolchain I have built the new version of Mobile RSS.

I have just sent off Mobile RSS version 2.4.2 to Ste to be included in installer.app.

This version should fix issues with firmware 1.1.4 and also fix some stability issues.

If you wish to install by hand you can download it at:

iPhone SDK First Thoughts

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

I got a chance to play with the new iPhone SDK tonight and… man has it changed.

They have changed a ton of things, and in my opinion have made it more difficult in their attempt to make it easier.

The one thing I was really looking forward to was the Interface Builder for iPhone, however, in this release of the SDK it does not exist.
The main reason I was looking forward to this is because right now you have to spend a lot of time pixel pushing everything around. Figuring out heights and positions based off of screen size minus other elements, etc. then testing to see how it works, then tweaking and checking again, and that continues over and over.

With Interface Builder I would be able to just drag and drop to where it looks good first time.
Not to mention that this would make it so I wouldn’t have to figure out how all the new GUI elements are packaged in the new API.

The Simulator however is GREAT!
Major time saver.

So my verdict right now is it is a bit of a pain.
At least coming from the unofficial SDK.
Once we get the IB I think it won’t be as bad.

My biggest complaint is that with all these changes it means I have to REWRITE all my apps! :-(

iSteamy 1.1: Picture Report

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

So as you know some guys are just jerks and think its funny to post pictures of themselves in all the different categories.

To you guys, come on.

Also be careful guys because if it doesn’t stop soon I will be forced to take more action.

For you that hate these images as much as I do, there is now the ability to report images as being in the wrong category or improper (yes I know the term improper is a little sketchy in this app, but I think you know what I mean… like pictures of a room, or computer screens or things like that)

This will be manned by our team of monkeys for now, so don’t expect immediate fixes, but we will try to get as many as we can removed as fast as we can.

In the not so distant future the plan is to allow people who wish to help the ability to moderate the reported images and either move them to the correct category or delete them.

If you wish to help out in this area, feel free to leave a comment and we will get back to you when this part is ready.

iSteamy 1.0.15

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

I got news today that iSteamy has become so popular that my hosting company is complaining about the number of connections. They aren’t complaining about the bandwidth, but instead simply the number of people connecting at once.

This caused the problem that they limited the number of connections that the account could get at once. This caused some people to get some unresponsive times in the app or on the website.

So anyways, I am in talks with DreamHost to get a virtual private server which should hopefully stop them from complaining. The problem with this is that it can take a couple of weeks, or more, and I can’t let the app and website be as flaky as they made it. So my temporary solution was to offload most of the standard server connections to another web server.

My hope is that this will remove enough of the connections from the standard server so that viewing media will work like normal, or better. So here is hoping that it removes enough of the standard connections to fix the problem while not causing a surge in bandwidth speeds on the other server.

So, how can you help?

Make sure that you install version 1.0.15.

Thats it. Hopefully these changes will do the trick.
